A deserted street in the Montmartre district of Paris, possibly painted in the early morning to avoid the crowds. It was originally painted on canvas but it shows the wear of being kept by the artist for years without being mounted on a stretcher. At some stage it has been laid down on board but still shows a couple of creases in the canvas from being stored in a folio.
The label on reverse is from an exhibition in Sweden and although it clearly shows the Title, the artist's name is stubbornly indecipherable.
Although the frame is 1950s to 60s I think the painting is earlier, possibly even 1930s.
