1950s Scandinavian painting in in a narrow artist's strip frame, typical of the period. This is a great play on perspective, the painter using the tiled floor to recede the picture plane towards the far door while the table hovers precariously, as if it belongs to an entirely different painting. Artists had been exploring spatial representation in two dimensions in this way since the cubists but it was still a major preoccupation with cutting edge contemporary painters in the middle of the last century.
