This is a small but deceptive painting. Looking at it over time I've seen more and more in the layers of paint and content. It is almost a sketch in that it is rather thinly painted but in fact the economy of brushstrokes is the strength of the work.

Every mark counts, each line of leafless tree, the figures - particularly the simple intimacy of the father and child - are all perfectly placed. The Blue tram brings the whole composition together, leading the eye away down the receding, slush covered, city road.
